"Writers don't die..." ~ A happy birthday message from poet, Nikki Giovanni to Gwendolyn Brooks, the first Black person to win the Pulitzer Prize. As a poet, Ms. Brooks not only chronicled the experiences of Black Chicagoans, she created awards and used her influence to leverage life changing opportunities for other writers. She defined and held the post of Illinois Poet Laureate from 1968 until her passing from cancer in 2000. This message was recorded during an interview with Writer/Director Shahari Moore, who will release, "Brooks People" (2017) a short documentary and "Cool: On Gwendolyn Brooks" (2018) a long form documentary. This was so selfless of Nikki, whose birthday is also on June 7th. Prince shares the same birthday as well.
